The human personality comprises a body and a soul. The body is made from components of the earth, while the soul is a non-physical element assigned to the perfected physical human being and enters it in the formative period of the body. As a result of this combination man has the capacity of exploring physical as well as non-physical areas for knowledge, sustenance and survival.

The majority of individuals give attention to the physical dimension of life. A small amount, however, do give some attention to the non-physical element called the soul, either as a result of religious influence or out of desire to have spiritual experiences. The process of indulging in activities associated with the soul is called spirituality.

Many religions enjoin spiritual exercises upon their followers. These are designed to develop the powers of the mind, and are forms of meditation. We find numerous religious groups all over the world using various recipes for meditation.

Islamic Spirituality differs in concept and practices from all the other religions. It does not emphasize meditation, although this is part of the process of attaining full realization of the status of man in this life. However remembrance and pondering are the ways of truly elevating one’s position spiritually.
